Okay so about two months ago, my girlfriend hit a deer and totaled her car. I let her drive my truck while she shopped for a new car (I have a daily driver of my own). She has really been dragging her feet on getting something new (has had an insurance check for weeks) but we agreed she would buy something before I got back since my dad is coming to visit. I was out of town for work the past month and the day before I flew back she asked me for my insurance. I sent it and asked why but got no response until she got out of jail. She was up front about about what happened and is obviously remorseful. I’d be a little more forgiving if it was her own car but still. That truck is a project vehicle that I’ve been building for the last 5 years and owned it for 8. If it matters, she blew a .16 which is twice the legal limit.
Addedndum: we’ve known each other for about 3 months. Maybe a little longer.
UPDATE: I took her to the dealership today. She finally found a new car that she bought so at least she can get around town (until her license is suspended). I went ahead and broke up with her. Seemed like she saw it coming a mile away based on how I’ve been acting since I got back.
For all of you mentioning legal implications/insurance: here’s what I found. I called the arresting PD and they said I have nothing to worry about. Not sure if this changes if there are damages (in this case there were none). I called my insurance company and they said my rates would not go up. DUIs follow the insurance for the driver not the owner in this case. I’m lucky. If she had gotten into an accident with damage to my vehicle or other persons/vehicles my insurance would be involved any my rates would go up.
TLDR: Girlfriend gets DUI in boyfriends truck while he is out of town. Boy dumps girl. Boy does not get in trouble with insurance or cops because there were no damages.
